What are called "tabernacles" are devotional paintings or sculptures which you find at street corners in Florence. Some are very old, others are more recent. In fact the very old ones have usually been put in museums and replaced by copies.
As you can see they have a roof and very often a sheet of glass over them to protect them. The sheet of glass is a problem, when you want to take a picture. Not only does the glass reflect the light, but it can be very grimy, and you don't see much. Most represent the Madonna and Child, but not all. Here is a Saint Sebastian.
