The Vegetariano is the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Florence. We were there last night and had a excellent meal, but it was an experience different from any restaurant experience we ever had.
We pushed the front door, came in and found a room with tables and chairs, but not a single human being in sight. We took the corridor at the end and came to another room filled with people.
There was a counter where food was handed out and a long line up of people. The menu was on a black board. It is on an erasable board because it changes all the time depending on the season and on what vegetables are available.
So there was this long line of people waiting their turn to place their order with a man with a white beard (the owner?) who was sitting in front of the menu. Once you had selected what you wanted, you paid for your order.
He gave you a receipt and a bit of paper on which he had written what you selected. You took it to the line facing the counter where the food is given out (like the guy to the left in the picture above is doing).
The food is delicious but we did not really know how to order, and we ended up with far too much. We each took one primi and one secondi piatti. Our mistake was to order the same thing. We should at least have ordered different things. However it was rather confusing, all in Italian, there was a rush of people and when we ordered we had no idea of how much food we would get. You had to figure out where to get your glass and flatware (in the dresser on the right in the above photo). We found seats in a kind of outside extension.
There was a large selection of desserts. Fortunately we did not order any, as we would not have been able to eat them. It was certainly one of the best restaurants we have eaten in, if a little chaotic.
