San Leonardo is a narrow, crooked street that snakes up a hill just outside the city. You might not be impressed with its stone walls, sometimes leaning or even crumbling, through which you every now and then comes to a gate . Here is a typical view.
What these walls hide are beautiful villas and their parks and outbuildings. Addresses to most of the large houses on the hill in the following picture are on San Leonardo. The street, always corseted between walls, unrolls just behind these villas.
You might get a glimpse of them, especially if they are built on a height as in the photo below, but usually, you only see the walls and the gates.
I was able to cheat with one of them and show you both the entrance, on San Leonardo:
and what is on the other side of the wall as you can see it from one of the high terraces of the Bardini, a garden we visited (future post). Unfortunately, the angle is rather narrow and you do not see much. Among the things not included in the picture are most of the house and it large patio, a swimming pool and a park.
There are several streets even narrower than San Leonardo such as this one. The plant on the wall is a rose bush with still some good blooms at the top.
