January 17th is the feast day of Sant'Antonio Abade, who among other things is the protector of domestic animals. This improvised chapel is for the blessing of pets. We saw a blessed dog come out with its owner, and the lady in the picture tried to convince a man who was walking his dog to go in and have him blessed, but without success.
Below is the church of SS Annunziata which we pass every day as our apartment is in the street under the arch on the right. You might or might not know that the Pope has declared a jubilee year. The church door on the right (la Porta santa della misericordia) is never opened, unless it is a jubilee year and going through that door, you get a plenary indulgence! (there are a few other requirements).
Although the majority of people in Florence are not rich, it is nonetheless a very rich city. So far, we have seen four cars driven by chauffeurs. Here is an example of something you would be hard pressed to find in North America, except perhaps in New York City: a store that specializes in domestic staff uniforms.
