Odds & Ends #3

In Florence, garbage is not picked up on the street. You take it to a kind of container. There are several of these containers and you are expected to do a first sorting (there is one for glass, one for material that can be composted, etc...).



I was rather puzzled by these as they are so small. I thought they must fill up very fast. I only understood how they worked when I saw them being emptied.




There is a large container under the top part which is emptied in the truck.

In the downtown the streets are narrow, but farther from the center, there are bicycle lanes separated from the road proper by a curb. Below, the pedestrian sidewalk is on the left, the bicycle lane on the right and the road behind the parked cars.


Several of the old palaces which have/had a large garden (never visible from the street) have a bell to ring the gardener. I expect that in the past you could ask him (paying a tip) to show you the garden, when the owners were not using it. Anyhow I have been tempted to ring one of these to see what would happen.
